Dentures for Children

Dentures for Children

Children often require complex prosthodontics rehabilitation due to trauma or the presence of a range of dental anomalies. A multidiscplinary approach to the management of conditions is essential. Appropriate treatment is often difficult due to issues of age, behaviour management, a transitioning dentition and a lack of experience in managing, often quite rare conditions.

Many of the conditions are unique and uncommon, and management is often anecdotal. However an understanding of growth and development is important in allowing the formulation of a treatment plan that is appropriate for a child at any age. The dental practitioner should know the management of traumatic tooth loss, the congenital absence of teeth and the management of disorders of enamel and dentin, involvement of clinicians in other disciplines and the development of long term treatment planning.

1:3 is the ratio of fracture of upper denture to lower denture

Fracture of denture may involve any part of the prosthesis. Any solution to repair the denture is less ideal than making a new one. Denture fracture is usually caused by accidental dropping of the denture, improper fit, excessive occlusal load and improper occlusion of the denture teeth. Chairside repair of broken denture can be done on acrylic base and denture teeth. Repair of metal parts and other complicated cases will require repair in the dental lab.

TMD in Denture Treatment

TMD in Denture Treatment

Involvement of TMD in prosthodontics is oftentimes ignored. Denture treatment and other dental management usually concentrate on dentition and the surrounding structure setting aside the importance of temporo mandibular joint. We can not get away from the fact that the dental structure is at the interior segment of the mandible and the joint is at the posterior. Any manipulation or correction of the dentition is automatically reflects a certain degree of change at the joint area. Any kind of treatment approach without awareness of the joint’s existence may put the dentist at legal risk.
